Cheap Eats: London Edition
Posted Under: Cheap Living Tips
Last week, in a moment of weakness, my friend and I ventured into a Burger King here in London.
What happened next was something like divine intervention—
Somehow, the ketchup (of a very apologetic English man) had made its way out of its little foil packet, across the store in a seemingly impossible trajectory, and onto my jacket, creating something of a Jackson Pollock all over my back.
I was being smote by the London food gods. How dare I walk into a Burger King and think it’d be okay?
I may be a college student and I may be broke, but that’s no excuse. I resolved never to set foot in another fast food chain (at least not while English men with slippery fingers and packets of ketchup were on the loose). And to save you from a ketchup massacre of your very own, here are some cheap eats, London style:
1. Tortilla
Essentially an English version of Chipotle, at Tortilla, you build your own custom burrito (or salad, if you want to be all healthy about it)! But seriously, the burritos here (£4.50 medium, £5.50 large) are massive and totally delicious. Come here for lunch (AKA food coma) and don’t forget the guac!
2. Masala Zone
So maybe this place doesn’t serve the most authentically Indian food, but it’s still really good! Come here for the lunch special (£8.35 for 2 courses), or if you’re with a larger group, go for the thali.
3. The Golden Hind
One of my professors recommended this place as THE place for fish and chips in London. The entrees themselves range from around £5 to £10. I went there with a friend for lunch last week, and I think she’d vouch that it was, in fact, pretty amazing. I still don’t understand mushy peas, though…
4. Yo Sushi
Conveyor belt sushi that’s fun to watch but better to eat. Every Monday is Blue Monday, where all the different plates are served for the blue plate price (only £2.20 each). Students also get a 25% discount every weekday from 3 to 6.
5. Kebabs!
Londoners supposedly love kebabs, and they’re apparently the perfect drunk food after all the pubs finally close. Accordingly, a lot of kebab places are open super late, and the things are dirt-cheap (usually £3 to £4). London is littered with these spots; just look for those rotating things of meat in the store windows! I’ve yet to run across a kebab I didn’t like, but I’ve heard very good things about Taza Kebab House and their lamb shawarma.
6. Pret A Manger
This place is my go-to for when I’m running late to class. It’s a chain, and there are stores sprinkled through the city. The sandwiches and salads go for around £3 to £4 each, and they’re quick, delicious, and filling.
